LESSON 6 - Impact of Inclusion
While it is important to discuss many of the difficulties that can occur in less than optimal environments, we also have to look to the positives that can occur when 2SLGBTQ+ students and their families are seen, accepted and honoured in classroom spaces.
However, as this is an ongoing process many of the positive outcomes are tempered with suggestions for improvement as well as serious issues that remain.

LGBTQ+ Families Speak Out
Many of the participants of the OISE at U of T based project “LGBTQ Families Speak Out”discuss the importance of inclusion and how it can impact both students and their families.
Trans & Nonbinary Health
Using gender-inclusive language in the classroom creates an environment where all students can feel seen and affirmed. Physical and health education classes are particularly fraught with gendered terms and concepts, so the use of inclusive language can make all students feel welcome.

Supporting Nonbinary & Trans students
Egale’s resource on supporting non-binary and trans students starts with the environment that you create in your classroom. Non-binary and trans students need to be supported openly and consistently. Taking the time to clearly advise your students on what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour is one step you can take to creating a more inclusive classroom.
Combating Homophobia & Transphobia
In their second climate survey “Still In Every Class In Every School” Egale Canada examines issues of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in Canadian schools. The report speaks to the benefits of creating inclusive environments for 2SLGBTQ+ students. However, research shows that there is still so much more work to be done in order to create spaces where 2SLGBTQ+ students can feel as safe and comfortable as possible. Refer to pages 109-127.
